While most of us tend to rely on modern medicine to provide us with our healthcare answers, we rarely take the time to seek out alternative solutions for our families. Often the drugs that we take only manage the symptoms of a problem that we are having and sometimes just mask them, causing us to need multiple courses of a drug to provide us with the relief we desire. We often wait until we are sick before seeking a remedy and there are many side effects that come from these prescribed medicines. Surely you or someone you know has experienced a side effect from a medication and had to not only seek further treatment to prevent the side effect, but had to start over again with a new medication for the initial issue.
Nature’s medicine has been around for thousands of years and were used even before the prescription drug market took hold of our healthcare system. Essential oils are natural aromatic compounds from plants that are intensely powerful, being 50-70% more potent than herbs. For example, one drop of peppermint oil is the same as drinking 28 glasses of peppermint tea! They can be used safely in your home without side effects and support the body by not only minimizing symptoms, but also addressing the true cause of the issue or illness. Because you can learn to use essential oils in the comfort of your own home, you are able to take charge of your own health and minimize out-of-pocket costs for co-pays, doctor’s visits, and prescription drugs.
There are three main ways that essential oils can be used: aromatically, topically, and internally. Most of us are familiar with the aromatic use of oils, as they are often used in perfumes and other fragrances. Essential oils can be put on a cotton ball or special jewelry, or diffused into the air to address specific issues. They can kill germs in the air, open the airways in your lungs, and even affect your mood.
Topical use of the oils means applying them directly to your skin, enabling the oil to enter your bloodstream within 30 seconds. This provides relief much quicker than any over-the-counter or prescription drug. The oils can be applied directly to problem areas, or in areas where your pores are larger to enable for quicker absorption, such as the bottoms of your feet. The potency can also be controlled for sensitive skin or specific kinds of oils by using a carrier oil, such as coconut oil, fractionated coconut oil, or any kind of vegetable oil. Not only do essential oils inhibit the growth of bacteria and viruses, but they also are a natural antibiotic capable of penetrating the outer membrane of your cell walls – antibiotics do not have this property. This enables the oils to help your body from the inside out!
Internal use of essential oils is a controversial subject, and there are only certain oils that are meant to be taken internally. First and foremost, the oils used must be of the highest purity level. There are only certain brands that are truly of the highest purity, so be sure to do your research before ingesting oils and always check with your physician before doing so. You should NEVER take an oil internally that is not labeled safe for dietary use.
There are actually different grades of essential oils in use, so one oil is not created the same as another. The first is known as Synthetic Grade – these are oils produced in labs that copy the components of an oil, and is often used in lotions and perfumes. The second is Food Grade – these can be found in flavorings such as salad dressings or gum. The third is Therapeutic Grade – this term is often found in health food stores as the grade is intended to benefit your health. The problem is there is no regulated industry standard for Therapeutic Grade, so oils can be labeled as pure but can contain only a small percentage of actual essential oil in a larger quantity of filler oil. This is why it is so important to do your research to verify the purity of the oil you plan to use.
Essential Oils are a great way for you to take charge of your family’s health and feel empowered to control what substances you are putting in your body. Many of us do not think twice about taking a prescription drug or an over-the-counter medicine, but are hesitant to try something like essential oils. They have been used in natural medicine long before synthetic drugs were available, so take this opportunity to explore essential oils with me.
